Request nowI'm Mariama, the founder of Locktique Studio. I had my own locs while living in Ghana, and caring for them is what pulled me into this industry. I wanted to actually understand what I was doing to my hair, the way I'd want to care for my own children's hair one day: washing it right, keeping the chemicals out, letting it stay natural instead of someone else's idea of neat.
That's what sent me to study every type of loc there is. Sisterlocs and microlocs pulled ahead of everything else for me, and that's the specialty Locktique Studio was built on, first back home in Ghana and then here in Lakewood, New Jersey, once I moved to the US. It's been more than ten years now, and I'm still learning.
What I care about with every client is what I cared about with my own hair: the right tools, the right products, and a maintenance schedule built around your hair, not a generic chart.
Gently. The right way, from the start.

Sisterlocs and microlocs are the focus. The rest of the menu keeps your locs healthy at every stage after that.
Fine, consistent, versatile locs sized to your density and long-term styling goals. Consultation required before booking.
Small, natural locs built with interlocking or two-strand methods for a softer, more textured finish.
Sisterlocs pricing starts at $1,300 for the install, around 9+ hours at the chair. Loc size, hair length, loc count, thickness, and hair type all affect the final time and cost, so your exact price is confirmed at your consultation.
A few close-ups from the chair, sectioning, finished color, and styling.
Everything from choosing a style to what year one really looks like: sisterlocs and microlocs, covered start to finish.
Both start as small, uniform locs. The right one comes down to hair density, lifestyle, and how much sizing structure you want. Sisterlocks is the trademarked, tightly-sized technique done to an exact sectioning pattern; microlocs is the broader style built with interlocking or two-strand methods. A consultation is required before booking sisterlocs or instant locs, so the plan is built around your actual hair rather than a generic chart.
Time varies by style and hair density: starter locs run around 3 hours, a full microlocs install closer to 9, and sisterlocs timing is confirmed at your consultation. Come with clean, detangled hair, and skip heavy oils or butters the day of, since they slow down sectioning and locking.
New locs go through a "budding" phase before they mature. Frizz, loose hair at the roots, and uneven sections are normal. Locs typically lock more securely between 3 and 6 months, and reach full maturity closer to a year or later.
Most microlocs and sisterlocs do well on a 4–8 week retwist schedule. Retwisting more often than every 3–4 weeks puts repeated tension on the same root and is one of the most common causes of thinning at the hairline.
Locs still need regular washing, every 1–2 weeks. Use a residue-free shampoo, rinse thoroughly, and moisturize the shaft with a light, water-based spray rather than heavy oils at the root.
Over-manipulating new growth, retwisting too often, and heavy oils or butters at the root are the most common causes of thinning and slow locking. Patience and a light hand do more than any product.
Thinning near the root, a loc that feels loose or is slipping apart, or a section that stays damp for days after washing are worth having a loctician look at in person. Small issues are much easier to correct early than after months of growth.
Sisterlocs is a trademarked, tightly-sized technique done by trained consultants. Microlocs is the broader term for small locs started with interlocking, two-strand, or crochet methods. Both give a fine, natural look. The right fit depends on your hair density and how much structure you want.
Yes for sisterlocs and instant locs. Both require a consultation before booking, so the plan fits your hair from day one. Other services can be booked directly.
Starter locs run around 3 hours; a full microlocs install runs closer to 9 hours depending on hair density and desired size.
Most clients come in every 4–8 weeks. Retwisting more often than every 3–4 weeks can actually weaken the hair at the root.
Only for loc extensions, and it's flexible. Bring your own hair if you already have it, or we'll talk through where to get it and whether I provide it at your consultation. Sisterlocs, microlocs, and retwists don't require you to bring hair.
Often, yes. Loc repair is priced per loc so a few problem spots don't cost the same as a full redo. The sooner it's looked at, the easier it is to correct.
Yes. A consultation first makes sure the existing pattern and hair health are a good starting point before any retwist or repair work begins.
Come with clean, detangled hair if possible, and skip heavy oils or butters the day of, since they slow down sectioning and locking.
